I mean. I get the sentiment but looking at the whole picture Chimchar had to deal with a good chunk of his trauma before evolving. Sure he still had issues to work with Blaze even evolved, but I think it was very intentional that he still stayed that long under Ash as Chimchar. Something about how it was not only Paul’s training that was stagnating Chimmy’s progress, but his own insecurities had to be dealt with it before he could start moving on from the past and grow with Ash.
Also I’m sure that Ash and Paul first 6v6 was deliberately written to happen after Dawn’s losing streak and the arc she goes after that. Because if she was still in that funk by the time Ash had his moment to feel like a loser, she would.not.help (in fact i think she would make it worse asjdaiosda). And like yeah, most of the legwork happened during the Wallace Cup but she was still very insecure in DP86 (Hearthhome Collection episode) and then Piloswine happened in DP106 and if I know the Dawn the writers were writing, I know for a fact that if AshvsPaul and the outcome of it happened before Dawn gained Mamoswine’s respect she would not be able to cheer on Ash and I’m sure she would get stumped again and retract on her own progress lmao
Also. DP is so damn long asodjoasda I think it’s fine to have each form of Infernape have its time to shine (specially under Ash since Chimchar also spent like 50 eps under Paul lmao) and I think they paced out the time he stayed as each one quite nicely considering how in previous/later/even the same/ series there was plenty of pokemon that didn’t get to reach final forms long enough for us to “know” them (Quilava, Incineroar, Naganadel, Melmetal, Noivern).
Oh yeah, I too always liked the idea of Gible at least reaching Gabite. I think that back in the day I even theorized that that would be how he would learn to control Draco Meteor (an evolution mid-league) and honestly? Baby me was right, that could’ve totally happened (perhaps even in the place of Quilava’s evolution since that always felt random despite me liking that his and Dawn Quilava evolved so close together but they never interacted so what’s even the point of that connection 🤷?)
