because ilya spent the previous night having what he previously thought would be the most boring night he could imagine. he sat in front of a fire and looked at it all night! that is so boring!
and YET
getting to sit quietly in one place with shane for a whole evening is transformative for ilya. they spend a whole slow evening in each others’ presence, softly talking and learning about each other, constantly gently touching in a non-sexual way for the first time ever maybe? and he liked it so much
he liked it SO much you guys
he is so clearly comfortable, pliant and soft that evening - even when he’s having these hard truths wrenched out of his throat he is able to be soft about it. he actually likes talking to shane! he likes sharing parts of him he hasn’t before! he likes the quiet mundanity of sitting in front of a fire with someone you care about and just breathing it in for a few hours!
like it’s literally their “i would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you” moment! everything ilya thought would feel mundane (and would make shane realise he wouldn’t want him any more) was thrilling and joyful
ilya doesn’t just get to love shane, he gets to like him too! it’s SUCH an important step for them! they’ve never had time to like each other before! ilya likes shane through the mundanity as much as in the thrill! they finally get to like each other!!!!

could u imagine if anglo daoist scholarship was anywhere near the scale of bible scholarship. it’s so overwhelming to me by contrast but ultimately beneficial in the sense that u have small militias of bible boys scraping the archives and the archaeological sites for any scrap of data even tangentially relevant to the field & immediately working on translation/interpretation/dissemination. they got people paying millions – maybe even billions – of real life dollars to produce working translations of aramaic transliterations in hieratic script meanwhile we have maybe less than 10% of the literal daoist canon translated. but all of this will change when i become god empress of the world
if we could convince bible studies that the daozang preserves information about first temple yahwism the whole thing would be translated into english and german by the end of spring break
While I won’t deny that biblical scholarship does have a lot more support than the scholarship of other religions, I feel like this post represents a depiction of biblical scholarship that simply is not true.
Most of the people scouring the archives and archeological sites and then immediately setting to translation/interpretation/dissemination are looking for things that purely support their dogmatic view of what they want the bible to say and insist the bible must say.
Actual biblical scholarship, which bears about as much similarity to various dogmatic traditions as a creationist textbook does to an actual scientific textbook, faces the same issues as many scientific fields do; lack of funding; losing valuable sources to private collections or simple mishandling by people that are ignorant or are hoping to profit off of selling what they found, ans removing it from where it was found already throws a lot of the veracity of the information into question; some thing being buried into archives because the people that were researching it didn’t find the dogmatic support they wanted; archeologicsl sites being contaminated by barely trained or untrained people looking for support for their specific views, etc, et all.
Again, don’t get me wrong, biblical scholarship is better supported than studies of other religious texts, but it’s hardly an exhaustive field that gets all the support it wants, and is often stymied by people unwilling to support the research into anything that doesn’t support their specific dogma.
