Emotional Intelligence as a Tool For Taking Your Business to the Next Level

Emotional Intelligence is the magic wand for your business. If you’re passionate about

starting a business that will be highly successful, or trying hard to take your existing business to the next level, then you have to read this.
Various works of research have shown that we need more than knowledge or high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) to really succeed in life; mores, at running a business.
As an entrepreneur, it is important to attend business school, read wide, have a firm grip

of your industry, and know what works and what does not. But even more important is

having a high Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ). And this is because business in its entirety is all about people; whether you deal in products or services, you’re dealing with people.
Emotional Intelligence has to do with understanding our feelings and those of others. It is that “thing” which determines how we make personal decisions, respond to emotions, interact with people, and sail through social intricacies.
How do you offer the best service possible to your clients when you don’t understand

how they feel? Despite what many believe, this form of intelligence comprises a set of

skills that can be learned and applied every day.
Let’s take a look at some of these recipes for success.

You need to have emotional self-control

To understand people, it’s important to understand yourself first. You have to have

control over your own emotions —the way you react to issues or situations— if you hope to keep your clients, and add many new ones.
Having emotional self-control means you can respond to negative situations rationally

rather than emotionally. Don’t forget that people enjoy doing business with someone

who is emotionally stable. And that means a lot for the growth of your enterprise.
To have emotional self-control, you have to be aware of your emotions from time to

time. For example, the presence of negative emotions like anger, anxiety, pessimism,

sadness can weigh you down and take a drastic turn on your business.
But once you’re aware of them, what triggers them, and how they affect you, then they can be put in check over time. I mean you can manage them as much as possible. I know this can be challenging at first, things would always get better with time.
In essence, to move ahead in your business —and even your career— you must stay

motivated. And to stay motivated, you must have control over your emotions.

Adopt listening as a skill

Running a business has everything to do with managing relationships. Yet it is practically impossible to manage relationships without getting to know the concerns or perspectives of others.
The window to the heart of your prospective or existing customers is active listening. Let

them tell you what and how they feel about your product or service with a lot of

assurance that you care.
Listening goes beyond just hearing someone else. It’s a skill that could be used to set your business —and indeed your life— on the path of great success. From your business partners and investors to clients and staff, you should pay adequate attention to whatever ideas or suggestions they put across to you.
Whether you approve of their ideas or not, make sure to listen with rapt attention and

nod in acknowledgement. Why is this essential? People enjoy doing business with

someone they like, one who listens to them, their complaints as well as their feedback.
Many business owners are too busy chasing profit without considering the magical

power of active listening. They’ve forgotten that when they listen effectively to their

customers, they would get more insight into how people view their products or services.

And this in some way would hint them as to what and what should be done to make their

businesses perform better.
Never underrate the power of listening; it could make a lot of difference in your business.
Showing empathy is the way to go
As an entrepreneur, it’s not enough to listen to those you’re transacting business with,

showing care is essential. Think of your customers as yourself. Put yourself in their

shoes. Be on the same page as your clients. Ask yourself: if I were the consumer of this

product or service, how satisfied would I be?
It’s good to let your business be that ‘person’ whom people are endeared to and are

willing to be with no matter what because she cares.
Showing empathy means looking into customers’ complaints with as much urgency as genuineness. It also means sincerely putting your customers first as far as the delivery of your service is concerned.

Emotional Intelligence is the magic wand for your business

Beyond being intelligent and strategic

Beyond having a vast knowledge about running a business, there remains a great secret of success that can help you lead effectively in your industry and that’s Emotional Intelligence.
Although some are born with a high level of this form of intelligence, it can be learned.

Once you take control of your emotions, use listening as an important skill and show

great empathy for your clients, you’re already adopting Emotional Intelligence as a

powerful tool to take your business to the next level.

Emotional Intelligence tool against Prejudice at Work

Race. What a complicated subject. Growing up, I was influenced by a variety of cultures. My father immigrated to the

U.S. from the Philippines. My mom was “white”, from near Boston (with Portuguese and Irish ancestry).

Then, there were my friends: I grew up in a racially diverse city in Virginia, where I went to a predominantly black high school. Naturally, most of my friends were black, with roots in the South…But I had friends from other backgrounds as well.

And then, I moved to world’s melting pot: New York City.

This upbringing gave me a unique ability: Being close to people from so many varying perspectives, I learned a lot about how others see the world. For example, it was fascinating to me how a simple news report would elicit completely different responses from my mom, my dad, and my friends.

These experiences helped me to realize that people’s views are shaped by a myriad of factors.

But what does any of this have to do with emotional intelligence?
Racial Prejudice in the Workplace

Emotional intelligence, also known as EI or EQ (for Emotional Intelligence Quotient), describes a person’s ability to recognize emotions, to understand their powerful effect, and to use that information to guide thinking and behavior. EI helps you to better understand yourself, and others.

There’s probably no subject in America that gets emotions more riled up than race. Just check out the headlines of any newspaper today.
Recently, a reader wrote seeking advice on this topic in a very specific context:

I would be very interested in understanding better how to make someone realize when they are “out of order” in a way which helps them to test their own assumptions, rather than becoming defensive or becoming more deeply entrenched in a particular position.

For instance, someone admits that a friendly relationship has cooled because of a joke about race, but then writes it off because “People of that race are just too sensitive.” This individual has many good qualities but has an enormous blind spot.

What can be done?

–Robin

First of all, kudos to Robin for recognizing that her friend has a definite problem in stereotyping an entire race.

The honest truth is, we all stereotype at times. And whatever prejudices we have (and we all have some) are deeply ingrained.

That’s why conversations about the topic are so valuable–because hearing from the other side can challenge our beliefs and get us thinking. They help us close the perspective gap and find a way to display empathy–if we let them.

So what should you do in this situation?

How to Respond

In the workplace, race relations are tricky. Having a conversation about them, at the right time and place, can combat ignorance and help broaden views–if people are willing to listen.

But that type of conversation can also quickly get awkward. Or worse, very heated.

Of course, any communication you initiate must be tailored to the individual you’re dealing with. Emotional intelligence includes recognizing that individuals respond differently to various styles of communication (as well as foreseeing how your own emotions get in the way of rational thought).

Additionally, although the ability to be flexible and adaptable is generally good, you also want to stand up for your principles and not water them down.

That being said, when addressing racial prejudice in the workplace, I offer the following suggestions:

Choose the proper place and time.

Certain behaviors require an immediate response.

For example, you shouldn’t allow a colleague to make someone else feel uncomfortable with racially charged statements. If others hear such statements, refusing to address them immediately shows tacit support, and deals a huge blow to your organization’s efforts toward diversity.

But some of the most productive conversations about race are done on a one-to-one basis, where people are more comfortable letting their guard down and expressing their true opinions.

There’s a right time and place to begin these conversations. Choose a time when both of you are relaxed and in a positive mood.

Prepare the person for a sensitive topic.

Frame the discussion in a way that that relays that you want to be helpful.

You could begin with something like: “___, we’ve worked together for a while now, right? If you saw me display behavior that could be damaging, I would hope that you’d tell me. That’s why I’d like to talk about something I heard the other day…”

The goal is to get them listening while minimizing the tendency to get defensive.
Get the full story.

At times, we’ve all been quick to judge people or situations based on appearances, without details.

If you didn’t witness something personally, here’s a big chance that details have gotten lost in between. And even if you were there to see or hear something, you did so through a lens of personal biases and leanings that affect your perception.

In view of fairness, ask the person to describe how they remember the event. Be open to hearing your communication partner’s true opinions, and acknowledge their feelings.

Then, relate the situation as you saw it. Ask questions like: “Is that how you meant it?” Or, “Am I missing part of the story?”

Remember that this is a discussion, and you’ll be dealing with (potentially) strong feelings and emotions. And depending on the situation, you may also be in the wrong–at least about some things.

Listen carefully, and speak respectfully.
Admit your own failures.

If your friend made an inappropriate joke about race, think back through your own experiences. Maybe you feel that you haven’t said anything so extreme (or maybe you have–think hard), but we’ve all made mistakes. Then, try to relate.

Here’s an example of how it might go:

“I once said something similar , and someone called me out on it. At first, I thought they were just being overly sensitive. But over time, I realized that I’d be upset if someone made a joke I felt was at my expense. It also made me take a closer look at my own prejudices and stereotypes.

In the end, I was glad the person spoke up.”

Remember: If you’re white, you can’t fully understand what it’s like to be black, or Asian, or anything else. And vice-versa.

But everyone can relate to the feeling of being uncomfortable, angry, or hurt. Try to get your friend to focus on those feelings, instead of events.

None of us have control over how our comments make someone else feel–but we can learn from those reactions, relate them to similar feelings we’ve experienced in the past, and adjust for the future.

Try to relate that lesson, kindly and tactfully.

Putting It into Practice

Of course, facial expression and tone of voice also play a large role in this type of discussion. And depending on your relationship with the individual (and their personality type), you may need to be more direct.

The goal is to create an environment where the person doesn’t feel attacked, so they can receive the message the way it’s intended: to help.

In the end, remember: You can only do so much for others. In order for a person to improve–and all of us can improve–he or she has to want it.

When we approach things from an emotionally intelligent perspective, hopefully we help them to do just that.

And we work on ourselves in the process.

Coaching Employees For Success

The best benefit of effective coaching is improved employee engagement.

Coaching Your Employee To Success

Coaching Your Employee To Success
Coaching Your Employee To Success

Coaching Your Employee To Success
The pillar of every successful business is happy employees, and effective coaching is a crucial ingredient to satisfied employees. Effective coaching leads to improved performance, knowledge transfer, skill improvement, and employee retention.

Here are some statistics on the impact of excellent coaching:
- 77 percent of Fortune 500 employees suggest coaching had a significant effect on performance

- Executive coaching created a 788 percent ROI for one Fortune 500 company

- Around 70 percent of employees that received coaching saw improved relationships and communication from their coaching

- 88 percent of companies saw a strong ROI from their coaching experiences
If you’re running a 100 percent remote technology business, you’ll need to ensure you have an excellent coaching strategy, and here are some ways you can do that.

Invite employees into the conversation

The world’s best technology leaders listen to every concern of their employees. Former U.S Navy Seal Jocko Willink is one example, as he emphasizes decentralizing command during Navy Seal missions. Jocko believes companies can implement these principles into the corporate world with excellent success.
When you listen to your remote employees, you’ll know which areas need more focus. Unfortunately, in many instances, technology leaders make the mistake of debating their employees instead of listening. Yet, when you invite employees into the conversation, they’re more likely to work with you for improvement.
I run my nearshore software development company to provide oversight, leadership, consulting, and continuing education for all employees. As a result, my nearshore software development company builds engaged remote teams that are eager to improve and get involved with the conversation.

Create an effective plan for improvement

It’s challenging, if not impossible, to create an effective coaching strategy without a plan in the technology industry. Therefore, your improvement plan should cover these crucial aspects:
- The goal: Technology companies should clearly define the level of performance they want to see from their employees. As a result, the employee will know what you expect and be more likely to rise to the challenge.

- The action plan: Technology companies need a transparent action plan that sets a clear roadmap. The action plan should define the steps, the process and include unique ideas from employees.

- The checkpoints: Checkpoints are critical for encouraging improvement and growth. Technology companies should have set dates where they will review employee progress and see where things can improve.

- How to measure: Companies can’t gauge how successful their coaching strategy is without effective measuring. Therefore, companies need to make their observations and get individual feedback from the employees. Feedback is especially crucial when you run a remote business.
My nearshore software development company creates a plan and strategy to ensure all remote employees are on the same page and ready to succeed.

Show confidence in your employees

Some managers believe that scolding employees achieves the best results, but that’s rarely the case. Some employees will have more confidence in their abilities than others, and leaders need to be aware of that. Nonetheless, when technology leaders involve employees in the company’s future, decision-making processes, and coaching strategy, they almost always encourage employee confidence.
Of course, if the employee isn’t achieving optimal results, you’ll have to tell them. However, that doesn’t mean leaders should disregard an employee’s feedback and input. Research suggests that 98 percent of employees perform better when they feel confident.
Everyone understands the damage of high-staff turnover, and 96 percent of employees are more likely to stay at a company if they feel confident.

Push employees to their attainable limits

The best technology and business leaders will push their employees to their achievable limits. Although it’s critical to employ people with high motivation, you need to ensure you push employees out of their comfort zone. In turn, that will help employees become more engaged.
Employees want to grow and love a challenge. In many cases, they need their leaders to challenge and provide regular feedback to enable growth. Pushing employees is also vital to employee retention when you’re running a 100 percent remote business.
My nearshore software development company offers employees ongoing management and career guidance which encourages growth and pushes employees to their attainable limits.

Let employees work by themselves

Many managers will make the mistake of continually interfering when an employee makes mistakes. That’s understandable because it could affect your business in the short term, but employees need to learn how to succeed through trial and error.
The best leaders will enable their staff to complete the job and learn from their mistakes instead of taking the job out of their hands. Of course, the leader will offer guidance and support through the difficulty, but they won’t take over the task.

Some other crucial methods that great leaders use to coach their employees

- Create a team feedback culture: Technology leaders should create a culture based on team feedback. In addition, ongoing dialogue encourages all employees to have a voice and prosper in the workplace.

- Recognize your employees: When employees perform well, the best leaders will always recognize it regardless of the situation. It will instill confidence, give staff the belief to work alone, and build excellent habits.

- Build emotional intelligence: The world’s best leaders are excellent at gauging emotional intelligence. Moreover, the best leaders often have high degrees of self-awareness, leading to higher emotional intelligence. When leaders have emotional intelligence, they can understand their employees better.

- Understand individual strengths and weaknesses: Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and that’s the same for CEOs of Fortune 500 technology companies. Recognizing strengths and weaknesses allows technology leaders to implement the most excellent coaching strategies for remote teams.
In 2021, it’s highly possible to run a successful technology business remotely through excellent leadership.

To make a distinction here Eniola ( young looking one) played a role we call the thoughts of Eniola (Sola Sobowale).

The thoughts are loud and was Sola Sobowale displaying emotional intelligence, by taking a pause ⏯️ to process her feelings (emotions) and thoughts (depicted by Eniola’s act) before she make a decision.

Consiquentially thinking was applied by her as well as frequently navigating the emotions spur by her thought.

If countless number of factors influences our emotions then there’s need to pay attention to our emotion’s management.

Number of times we say and attempt the impossible which show we either are struggling with reality or we are yet to gain the knowledge and clarity.

The “reality” is that EMOTIONS are embedded in our blood and are data/information for action

Get Certified in Emotional Intelligence

It’s the EICP October Edition, 2021

Since 2016 we have helped to build peace, purpose, clarity and happiness into the lives of our participants.

Some come in confused about who they are, not sure why they act the way they do, they leave with utmost clarity

Others come in with issues like anger, perfectionism, passiveness, aggressiveness, anger & sadness about their life, bitterness, etc. and they are able to find a balance that makes life a better place

Each participant gets a 20 page personalized emotional intelligence (EQ) developmental report, that reveals their EQ & also show them strategies to personally practice and improve their EQ.

Each person leave with what we call “The Noble Goal”, a statement that identifies a daily fulfillment.

All participants would have a 1-on-1 coaching session with @enahorookhae after the certification called “THE CONVERGENCE”, a powerful session that fixes all remaining puzzles, and align their NOBLE GOAL with their business or work.

All participants are added to a lovely family like Whatsapp group, where we support each other and have a monthly EQ Sharpner Program to sharpen our EQ

You will become more EFFECTIVE, sustain smoother RELATIONSHIPS, become HEALTHIER, and live HAPPIER.
