rainstorm - chapter 4

Night has fallen by the time they emerge from the restaurant, Baby waving them out the door with a playful muttering that borders on insult. In the darkness, Rumi finds a type of comfort—the silhouettes of almost-mountains highlighted by moonlight over the horizon push the sea further from the sky.

The warmth of summer beats down even in the night, dog days casting long shapes of rippling heat that wobble uncertainly in the distance. Though the land seems to fight the constant turn of time, there’s still shelter to be found in the familiarity of a sweat-slicked neck and shoes over rough dirt.

Mira walks behind her, a constant hovering presence. Zoey may do the same—it’s hard to think about, the two of them walking side-by-side. And so she doesn’t. She keeps her eyes forward and watches the wave of a breeze passing through the leaves and fields of rice and wheat. They move through the town at a leisurely pace, if only because Rumi’s stomach is full and happy; Mira and Zoey match her speed despite the distance, so they must feel the same.

Mira knew she would regret this but she cupped a hand behind her ear and yelled,

Zoey slumped, almost dropping back to lay on the dinky tile she was sitting on—because it “brings her closer to her Pokemon” and totally not because she’s been putting a sweatless twenty per cent into Mira’s battles lately. Fixing her posture, she threw a look Mira’s way that made her cringe and held up a finger—pointer, thankfully—for her to wait. She turned to her Wartortle partner, who had been single-handedly…single-limbedly? bodying Mira’s team this entire time, like an asshole.

kay hello!! i’m a bit starstruck rn because i positively adore YOUR work!!!

lift and coast is the favorite child of my wip pile, but unfortunately it’s been stuck in development for ages. it has undergone several iterations and has picked up tropes such as:

• your mom spilling all of your embarrassing childhood stories
• the hard road to developing a sense of independence
• falling in love through driving lessons (and video games)
• stealing clothes (…in a bit of an unconventional way)
