Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.

Soon, you’ll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog’s author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn’t add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn’t lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we’re only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be… a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

Hey so I feel like this is a bad idea and presents more incentive for spam and post-thieving. The biggest problem this presents is an even larger fracturing of information on what is already a rather difficult site to gather consensus information on. Are those who created the initial post now left in the dark if someone were to create a new reblog under their original post? Is the idea of any post reaching 1,000, 5,000, 10,000… notes now completely impossible? People do like virality to a degree, shrinking the sphere of interaction to individual posts risks individualizing the communities here on tumblr even further and risks hurting artists outreach on their original posts.

Roll it back.

more than anything else, this update is making me confused. as in, who came up with this, and why was it determined to be a good idea, and how did they come to this conclusion?

i can only assume it’s to increase profits by making it more similar to other popular social media and therefore (hypothetically) more appealing, but you would think the people running the site would have some idea of how the culture and community of the site functions and say “hey this just isn’t the kind of social media where that’s going to work”

This is horrible I can’t see the number of notes on my posts at all without adding up everything in the chain

Cursed cursed cursed evil evil evil

jv jv

This is a terrible idea. Horrible.

EXTREMELY BAD HOLY FUCK.

This would kill the entire point of the reblog chain. Staff, please, don’t do this. It will transform the reblog chain in just plain twitter quotes.

jv jv

Seriously, this is a tumblr-killer feature. This breaks the most fundamental way tumblr is different from any other social network. This makes tumblr just another blueskytwitterthreads. Or worse: An unfederated mastodon clone.

Please, stop this. Please, don’t roll this out.

jv jv

Please, mutuals, post about this, comment and reblog the original post (while you still can without making it your own quote-post). I don’t know if staff is looking or if the feedback would matter, but seriously, this is a terrible change that would kill tumblr as we know it. Please, don’t roll it out.

jv jv

look, I can endure any kind of UI changes that are supposed to help tumblr-rookies to understand how this works. They may be a nuisance, but that’s ok, we have x-kit or we can get used to buttons being here or there.

But this. This changes the data architecture. This changes the SINGLE THING that makes tumblr the “… yes and” website. This KILLS THE COLLABORATIVE POSTING THAT MAKES THIS SITE DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER MEDIA PLATFORMS.

Please, don’t do this. Please, don’t ship this.

Tumblr has explicitly said in the past that they do not look at comments on their updates posts. You have to PUT IN A SUPPORT TICKET AND SELECT FEEDBACK FROM THE DROPDOWN

And if you subscribe to tumblr make sure to let them know if this will affect your support, and if so FOLLOW THROUGH.

Screenshot of an automated email after submitting a support ticket with the following text highlighted by me: “For feedback about recent changes and new features, please leave a comment on the corresponding post on our Changes blog. This blog is actively monitored by our engineers. And While we may not implement all suggestions, the discussion around them is what drives us to make great things.”

So. Maybe do both. Because I don’t know that they’re actually listening to us anywhere.

And also jv used to work for tumblr, I think he knows how to get the engineering team’s attention?

jv jv

Thaaaank you!

Folks, the only thing spamming the support form does is dog piling on some already overworked support folks. I’m not saying that commenting here is going to be effective, but at worst it will be as effective as the support form, without making some folks that have nothing to do with this change have a more miserable day at work

oh my god this dogass update even applies when you reblog your own post with an addition to your own post on the same blog.

I made a post about a dream I had. Opened the notes:

a few minutes ago, I reblogged the post and added more info about the dream. using the same blog as the original post, with no one adding anything between. i wanted to see if there were new tags bc i like reading tags ofc so i clicked on the notes on my own reblog:

Nothing. From now on if you want to see all the commentary on your own damn post you have to go back to the original. Amazing update that everyone will love.

oh my god… on top of this being stupid, does this mean that we can’t reblog our own posts for other time zones, for a little boost, etc, and then delete the reblog later, without wiping out the notes that reblog had collected?? Rest In Pizza artists and writers I guess 🫠 man, what the fuck!

oh god— does this also mean that larger blogs can no longer boost the notes of a smaller blog’s post (or even just a new/low-notes post) by reblogging it to their larger audience, unless they reblog it directly from OP and don’t add any of their own commentary?? This is a nightmare. What will happen to “investing” in posts at [x] notes!? The economy is going to be in shambles.

My platonic relationship:

I refuse to go to bed without you. I can’t go a day without talking to you because it hurts to be away. We are soulmates. We are bonded inseparably and if you left me I would be hollow. I’ll let you lay your head in my lap while I play with your hair, or simply rest my hand on your head.

Any romantic relationship I get into:

eh we’ve been going for a few months its pretty cool

This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.

A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!

Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.

All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.

Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!

you know even if a homeless person or a starving person is in that position because of their own “bad decisions” i don’t care. it doesn’t matter. no supposed financial misstep is enough to condemn someone to homelessness or poverty.

Search and rescue teams do not ask if a hiker was properly equipped and prepared before they go out to look for them.

EMTs do not ask if a driver checked their mirrors before they take them to the hospital.

Lifeguards do not ask if a swimmer made a mistake by going into a riptide before they dive in after them.

Judgement doesn’t help anyone, including you, the person doing the judging. Just help people. Just shut the fuck up and help people.

i’ll forgive a fat girl for so many annoying things simply because i know how fucking miserable it is to be a fat girl. like. you dont get to exist freely and with any joy until you go through a decades long soul search full of extreme emotional pain OR you nearly kill yourself to become something society might accept. or you toughen up after years of bullying forced you to be more confident. literally there is no painless route to being a fat girl in your 20 somethings. so like. fat girls can be annoying as a treat. you have all been annoying our whole lives

this goes quadruple for fat black girls and fat trans girls btw. literally do not try to tell me anything they do is cringe cuz i’ll demolish you with my giant ass

obsessed with how fixable society is, on a structural level.

obsessed with how all you need to do is throw money at public education and eliminate most standardized testing and you will start getting smarter, more engaged, kinder adults. obsessed with how giving people safe housing, reliable access to good food, and decent wages dramatically reduces drug overdoses and gun violence. obsessed with how much people actually want to get together and fix infrastructure, invent new ways of helping each other, and create global ways of living sustainably once you give them livable pay to do so. obsessed with how tracking diseases, developing medicines, and improving public health becomes so much easier when you just make healthcare free at point of use.

obsessed with how easy it all becomes, if we can just figure out how to wrench the wealth out of the hands of the hoarders.

i’ve lived in four different cities in my adult life and talked to literally tens of thousands of people about politics and the change they want to see in the world and the overwhelming majority of them wanted life to be better, happier, easier for everyone, and dreamed of that world. the only people who didn’t think that way were A) really obviously in need of mental/medical care, or B) rich.

wanting universal free healthcare, well-funded public education, and social support for all people is the most unbelievably normie opinion that exists, even among people who have lots of bad or misguided opinions about other things. when you feel alone, know that the reason you feel that way is billions of dollars are being spent to obscure the fact that you are in the majority.

Not feminist as in “women should be included in the draft” but feminist as in “being drafted is a violation of bodily autonomy for any gender”.

The draft should not exist. Drafting people into the military is a violation of human rights. You should not be able to force someone to risk their life. If you can’t find enough people who care about a conflict to keep it going then it simply shouldn’t keep going. You can’t even force someone to donate a kidney using government power, why the fuck can you force them to donate their whole body and life to a cause they don’t agree with or don’t care about?
