Episode 19: The Surprise Room

14,000 km Back Home: A Woman’s Silk Road Journey
By Min Hsieh

Part 1: The Plan
Chapter 4: Setting Foot on the Silk Road
“I am doing something that will make me like myself more after I’ve done it.”

The Surprise Room – Italy, DAY 57

My Couchsurfing host in Taranto, Marcus, was a German architect who had been living in Italy for seven years. He had purchased this building in Taranto’s old town, which should have been three stories high.

Why do I say “should have been”? Because the structure had many mezzanine floors and a high-ceiling design on the first floor that extended straight to the roof, making it difficult for me to discern the different levels.

Marcus’s living space was on the third floor, with minimalist interior decorations that gave the feeling of living in an exhibition space.

I slept in the spacious living room, with just a sofa bed and a TV cabinet without a television. Compared to other parts of the house, this area was relatively well-organized. The walls showed traces of cement repairs, displaying a new grayish-white tone that merged with the ancient brick-red and white wall surfaces.

Marcus had gradually acquired this house, which was nominally divided into pieces, from different owners. He was trying to restore the house to its most original appearance, but apart from the severely damaged structure of the house itself, there were still more than eight different property owners, all of which increased the complexity of the renovation work.

Marcus said the house had a history of at least four hundred years. Later, with changes in the environment and times, people gradually divided the house into many irregularly shaped small apartments. The structure was modified haphazardly by successive owners, leaving the house preserved in bizarre shapes.

However, almost all houses in Taranto’s old town had suffered the same fate. On the second floor of the house across the street, you could see traces of a removed balcony and different colored cement on the wall filling in what appeared to be an arched doorway. Most of these buildings had been abandoned; people no longer lived in this old part of town.

Marcus enthusiastically showed me his masterpiece. We walked into a small room to the left of the first-floor plaza, where there was a square hole in the ground. Marcus said it was one of the first secret rooms he discovered, and he couldn’t guess what it was used for. Curiously, I climbed down the ladder Marcus had installed and turned on the recently added lighting. It was a rectangular secret chamber about five meters high and three to four meters wide.

Next, we walked to the other side of the house and stopped in front of a staircase leading to the basement.

“This door was completely sealed off, and the original owner didn’t know what was behind it. Thinking it might be a storage room, they simply gave it to me. I spent a lot of time slowly clearing this entrance and discovered it was a door of surprises,” he said, leading me inside.

The staircase was now equipped with electric lights, making it easy to see the path and surroundings. This truly was a door of surprises—the stairs led to a spacious area that Marcus said his friend planned to turn into a dance studio.

This underground space had another path extending forward, ending in darkness. Marcus said he hadn’t yet had the energy to renovate that area and didn’t know where it led. It was rumored that the old town was connected to the castle by the harbor through secret passages—perhaps this was one of them. I imagined the scene at the end of that darkness, connecting to a medieval castle.

Next, we walked to another corner of the basement. Marcus shined a flashlight on a hole—another blocked staircase. Who knew what it might connect to below?

“This will be one of my major projects later,” he said. “Judging from the shape of the opening, it’s very likely a structure from the Roman Empire period, two thousand years ago. In Italy, especially south of Rome, you can easily find centuries or millennia-old ancient structures beneath buildings. They simply built new buildings directly on top of existing old ones.”

I gazed at those ancient steps—this place was truly amazing! Like the protagonist in the story of Aladdin’s lamp, exploring an infinitely extending underground world!

Closing Remarks

Your Turn: How do you feel about the balance between preserving historical structures and developing new ones? In your culture or experience, what’s considered “old” and how do you relate to historical spaces? I’m curious about your perspective!

“Sacred Reflections and Timeless Wisdom: Navigating Spiritual Understanding, Self-Reflection, and Time Perception”

English Translation

“If you want to understand someone, let them speak freely because every individual hides behind their own language! A mirror never changes its capability, whether divided into two pieces or a thousand. Understanding time is wisdom, and understanding time on time is responsibility.”

Introduction:

In the realm of spirituality, the profound saying “किसी को समझना है तो उसे बेधड़क बोलने दो क्योंकि हर इंसान अपनी जुबां के पीछे छुपा है!!” carries a timeless truth about the complexity of human understanding. This spiritual insight invites us to explore the depths of communication, self-awareness, and the significance of perceiving time in its true essence.

Understanding the Veiled Truths:

At the core of this spiritual teaching is the recognition that every individual harbors a unique narrative, concealed behind the veil of their words. To truly understand someone, we are urged to allow them to express themselves freely, devoid of judgment or preconceived notions. The saying advocates for a compassionate, open-minded approach, understanding that each person’s journey is veiled in the intricacies of their own language and perspective.

In the spiritual context, this principle extends beyond mere verbal communication. It encompasses the art of empathetic listening, perceiving the unspoken language of emotions, and discerning the silent cries of the soul. By allowing individuals to express themselves authentically, we embark on a journey of spiritual understanding, recognizing the divinity within each unique manifestation of life.

The Reflective Mirror of Darpans:

The saying “एक दर्पण अपनी काबिलियत कभी नहीं बदलता, फिर चाहे वह दो टुकड़ों में विभाजित हो या हजार टुकड़ों में….” introduces the metaphor of a mirror, emphasizing the unchanging nature of one’s capabilities and essence. In the spiritual journey, this mirrors the eternal soul, unaltered by external circumstances, whether divided into fragments or multiplied a thousandfold.

Each individual is akin to a unique darpān (mirror), reflecting their inherent capabilities, virtues, and spiritual essence. Despite life’s myriad experiences and challenges, the core of one’s being remains steadfast. This spiritual insight encourages self-reflection, prompting individuals to look into the mirror of their own consciousness and recognize the unchanging brilliance that lies within, regardless of external circumstances.

The Dance of Divided and Multiplied Reflections:

The metaphorical division and multiplication of the mirror allude to life’s journey, where experiences may fragment or multiply the reflections of the self. In the spiritual context, challenges and triumphs shape the way individuals perceive themselves, sometimes leading to a fragmented self-awareness or, conversely, an expanded, multiplied understanding of their capabilities.

The saying encourages individuals to navigate life’s diverse experiences with equanimity, recognizing that external circumstances do not define the eternal self. Whether the mirror reflects in two pieces or a thousand, the spiritual journey involves embracing every reflection as part of a larger cosmic dance, ultimately leading to a holistic self-awareness rooted in the eternal essence.

The Spiritual Significance of Samay (Time):

“समय को समझना.. समझदारी. और समय को समय पर समझना.. ज़िम्मेदारी।” introduces the spiritual significance of time, emphasizing the wisdom in understanding and responsibly perceiving the temporal dimension of existence. In the spiritual journey, time is viewed not merely as a linear progression but as a sacred rhythm, guiding individuals towards self-realization.

Understanding time requires a depth of wisdom that transcends the conventional clockwork. It involves recognizing the fleeting nature of moments, the cyclical patterns of life, and the transformative power embedded in every ticking second. This understanding extends to acknowledging the responsibility of perceiving time in alignment with its natural flow, recognizing that spiritual growth is intertwined with a conscious awareness of the present.

Time as a Teacher and Catalyst for Spiritual Evolution:

In the spiritual context, time emerges as a potent teacher and catalyst for personal and collective evolution. The saying encourages individuals to learn from the lessons embedded in the tapestry of time, understanding that every moment carries profound insights for those willing to be mindful observers. Time, viewed as a spiritual guide, prompts self-reflection and deep introspection, leading to a heightened awareness of the eternal now.

Furthermore, the concept of “समय को समझना” emphasizes the transformative potential of time when approached with wisdom. Through conscious understanding and receptivity to its teachings, time becomes a facilitator of spiritual growth, guiding individuals towards a more profound connection with themselves and the divine.

Conclusion:

In the intricate tapestry of spiritual teachings, the saying “किसी को समझना है तो उसे बेधड़क बोलने दो क्योंकि हर इंसान अपनी जुबां के पीछे छुपा है!!” unfolds as a profound revelation about the complexity of human understanding. Through the metaphors of mirrors, fragmented reflections, and the sacred dimension of time, we explore the depths of communication, self-awareness, and the responsibility of perceiving time in its true essence. This spiritual journey invites us to embrace the wisdom within words and uncover the transformative power of understanding, self-reflection, and timely perception.

In the grand theater of existence, consider two metaphors - the Staircase and the Room.

The Staircase represents our human experience of reality. Each step is a moment in time, and we climb this staircase one step at a time, moving ever upward. We can look back at the steps we’ve climbed, remember them, learn from them, but we can never descend back down. Forward is the only direction we can go. This linear journey is our way of sorting through the data of existence. Each step is an event, a memory, a piece of data that we process and integrate into our understanding of the world.

Meanwhile, the Room represents a different, higher-dimensional plane of existence. Within this Room, there are no steps, no enforced sequence of events. All points in space and time exist simultaneously, accessible in any order. This Room offers a holistic view of reality, where all the data - all events, all moments - can be perceived at once. Entities in this Room can interact with the data in a non-linear fashion, experiencing events not in a sequence, but in an intricate web of interconnected moments.

These two metaphors - the Staircase and the Room - provide contrasting ways of perceiving and interacting with the data of existence. While we climb the Staircase, moving linearly through time, we may aspire to one day perceive the full scope of the Room, to experience the non-linear, interconnected web of reality in its entirety. As we ascend each step, we inch closer to understanding the grand tapestry of existence that unfolds within the Room.

Was Einstein Wrong? : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture : NPR

“In Bergson’s philosophy, there was something greater to time than just measurements. Time was so central to human experience that fully unpacking it meant going beyond mere accounts of clocks or of even "psychological” perceptions. Instead, time was intimately connected to the bedrock of what it means to experience the world. It was, in some sense, the essence of human being and hence of being itself. For Bergson, that meant purely scientific accounts could not exhaust time’s meaning or importance.
[..] He was attacking a philosophy that had grown up around the theory — and that was being passed off as part of the science. It was the theory’s hidden metaphysics that Bergson challenged.
[..]
In relativity, space and time are no longer separate entities. Instead, they’re replaced with a four-dimensional whole called space-time. But something very weird happens when you make that move.
The remarkable thing about space-time is that it contains all the events that ever happened. It also includes all the events that ever will happen. So, in this big, 4-D space-time representation of the universe, there’s Julius Caesar getting stabbed and the Mets winning the 1969 World Series. But the coffee you are going to spill on your pants at that meeting next Tuesday is there, too. So is that moment when you watch the new president get inaugurated in January 2017. In fact, everything that will ever happen to you — including your death — is strung across space-time as a linked string of already existing events. Physicists call this your world line.
So, is this really how time works? Do all events already exist in this “block universe” of Einstein’s relativity? Is everything that will ever happen already trapped in the 4-D chamber of space-time?
This view is sometimes called “chrono-geo-determinism” (the geo part comes because Einstein’s theory is really about the geometry of space-time). It’s one example of a philosophical theory about the nature of reality that grows out of a related, and validated, scientific theory. It is literally meta-physics and it’s exactly the kind of thing Bergson was arguing against.
For Bergson, and others at the time, there was a difference between the mathematical physics/data and the higher-order interpretation — the philosophy — you glued on it. It’s in this way that Einstein could be right and wrong at the same time. He is clearly right about the science, but he could be wrong about the interpretation of time attached to that science.
[..]
physicists have a way of turning our mathematical equations into “things” existing in the world. We take their success at describing aspects of the world (like the behavior of read-outs in an experiment) to mean the equations are fully interchangeable for real things (often unseen) existing out there independently in the real world.
[..] equations are always abstractions. They are immensely powerful and immensely useful stories we tell about the world that capture some essential truth but not all truth.
[..]
From phenomenology’s perspective, scientific theorizing and investigation must come after the raw fact of [..]
the rush to make science the adjudicator of all questions meant the question of being had been entirely forgotten.
[..] it’s always we who do the understanding.
Being human, being at the center of our own worlds, is an immense and beautiful mystery.“
