Chapter Nine: Intermission
The bulb above her threw its dull yellow wash over the kitchen, but on her it looked different – woven in her hair and diffused around her temples, like a halo crowning her head. He stood there for much too long, forgetting to answer, tea towel slack in his hand.
“Just a hunch,” he said at last, reaching to turn the tap back on.
One eyebrow lifted slowly, verging on lethal – drawn back and aimed at him like Artemis with an arrow notched and ready.
“Come on. There has to be more to it than a lucky guess.”
Routine restored, she held the plate out and their fingers ghosted as he took it. He focused on the smear of mayonnaise, rinsing it away under the rush of water.
“Uh–” His tongue clicked against his teeth. “Nothing lucky about it my dear Watson.”
The ping of ceramic against the rack punctuated his words. She leaned back against the cabinetry, a sleek line of cotton and denim, watching him the way someone studied cards being dealt – waiting for the tell.
His throat constricted and heat gathered in his gut. His mouth filled, breath stumbling as his gaze dragged – collarbone, waist, denim hugging her hips – all of it, like petrol pooling, waiting for a match.
Teresa stripped the civilised right out of him, made him feel like an animal. Something primordial and carnal stirred in his veins. He wanted to throw her over his shoulder, carry her upstairs, and slam the bedroom door shut behind them while he was reduced to rough, one-syllable sounds.

Summary:
A few hours later, Lisbon winds herself around his body, under his arm, as she helps him hobble out of the airport. The man he was before would call this a win. But this is not winning, this is his path back to that peace he had in her arms all those months ago. She has now seen him as he is: that trembling, dark animal in the road, flayed open to his grieving and greedy soul, unable to escape the horrors of the open road. But Lisbon has stopped the car for him. She’s taking him home.
Peace is coming.
