Sunday Notes: Collin Snider Is a Cub Hoping to Replicate His 2024 Seattle Success

Collin Snider is with Chicago looking to recapture what he had two seasons ago with Seattle. Currently in camp with the Cubs, the 30-year-old right-hander was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners in 2024, logging a 1.94 with a 27.8% strikeout rate over 42 relief outings comprising 41-and-two-thirds innings. Last year was a different story. Hampered by a flexor strain and unable to get back on…

These are from Scares That Care last year, my first Burlesque routine in Williamsburg, and befitting of my history–it was horror and Christmas at the same time. Body positivity has always been a big part of my numbers, been harder lately cause I’ve been down on myself, but I still enjoy doing this.

Believe it or not, Cub and Trout are quite spiritual. They both like wearing a lot of bracelets and you may notice that along with a bunch of other random things, they wear bracelets with certain crystals and know their properties. They have different ones they wear, depending. On Trout’s boat you will see different crystal artifacts and other spiritual things. Trout and Cub very much believe in the balance of the universe. They take from the ocean as fishermen, so they must give back to it as well. Maybe they’re quite superstitious in that way. The ocean is a magnificent beast and they want to do everything they can to be on her good side.

Got Cub on the mind…

He’s Trout’s best friend and right hand man. Cub loves being out on the sea more than he likes anything else. Him and Trout spend a lot of their free time out on a dock, fishing, drinking beers, and listening to music. He takes being a fisherman very seriously. And much like Trout, when it’s time to work, he’s serious and efficient. He has a great smile and a warm personality. Despite enjoying being away at sea, he loves people.

It’s time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today’s episode, I talk to Lisa Marr and Lisa Gertrud, two-thirds of the band cub. Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Lisa Marr and Robynn Iwata formed cub in 1992 and while they were only together for five short years, were incredibly prolific, releasing a dozen albums, EPs and 7"es in their half-a-decade as a band. After their break-up, Robin started the band I Am Spoonbender, while Lisa M and Lisa G, who joined in 1994, moved to California where they started the band Buck. Since the ‘90s, both Lisas have had extensive careers in film and visual art; Lisa M co-founded the Echo Park Film Center, and Lisa G is a founding member of Vancouver’s Iris Film Collective. Back in mid-January, Mint Records released the 30th anniversary reissue of cub’s second album Come Out Come Out, and even three decades later, it is still fantastic!
