Defy expectations with… Wyverna Dretch, the triad, Anise, Aloe, and the Spice Girls! [my fan edit]
I’m allergic to aloe, and whenever I tell people this there’s about three different reactions I get.
Whenever it comes up I usually just mention it then make the same comment about how it’s hard to find sunscreen.
Most people are extremely normal about it, sometimes they didn’t realize that was an allergy that someone could have, but they just accept it and I put on my Neutrogena sunscreen and go about my day.
Some people though, are extremely surprised. I get some “REALLY?? BUT ALOE IS LIKE, A HEALING THING"s but I just explain that yeah, my skin stings and itches and burns and turns red and they accept it and put away the lotion they offered and I go about my day.
But there’s a select few that just cannot comprehend that I survive without aloe, or that it’s possible to be allergic to a plant that is widely used for healing and stuff. I get people who are so confused as to how I recover from sunburns. I even once got someone who asked if I was sure if it was aloe that I am allergic to and not some other ingredient (yes, I am sure. Any product is fine unless it has aloe, pure aloe straight from the plant has the same effect. I know that it is aloe.)
Guys, it is entirely possible to be allergic to stuff that is meant to be healing. There are people who have a contact allergy to water. This is an entirely possible thing that can happen to people.
(Also I recommend Neutrogena for people with skin sensitivities, they are fairly hypoallergenic and are one of the only brands I can get sunscreen from)

Aloe munchii
This tall shrubby Aloe species comes from the Chimanimani Mountains, along the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The plant pictured is not very big as yet, but at least it is obliging us with a nice display of flowers in winter, with their rounded heads and coral-pink color. Aloe is a large genus in the Asphodel Family, mostly found in Africa, Madagascar and Arabia.

Aloe vaombe
This is Madagascar’s tallest Aloe species, and it has a large distribution in the dry southwestern part of the country. In habitat, the leaves often become coppery-tinged in dry conditions, but our plant at the Ruth Bancroft Garden has shown no sign of doing this. However, the well-branched inflorescence of red-orange flowers is very attractive. Aloes belong to the family Asphodelaceae.

Aloe hardyi × powysiorum
This is a hybrid between Aloe hardyi, from South Africa, and Aloe powysiorum, from northern Kenya, neither of them often seen in cultivation. It is very free-flowering, with dense racemes that are pinkish-red with gray-green tips at the bud stage, then turning paler pink when they open.

Anise declares to Aloe she saw the “legendary” space pirate captain, Marika Kato in Lyngarth, and Aloe says Anise has a nice imagination and… thinks of this space captain blushing (after seeing two girls kiss) [my fan edit]

Anise boasts about “sapphic witches, trans romantic, bisexual horror, queer trailblazers, and more,” claiming it all exists within Lyngarth [my fan edit]. Based on an ad for Penguin Random House I saw today on Tumblr saying “Sapphic witches, trans romance, bisexual horror, queer trailblazers, and more! Explore hundreds of LGBTQ+ books with Pride in Your Words, a curated collection from Penguin Random House featuring stories by queer voices, about queer experiences.”
